Welcome to the Massachusetts General Hospital Bipolar Clinic and Research Program. We have three missions at our clinic. We are dedicated to providing quality clinical care, conducting clinically informative research, and educating our colleages, our patients, as well as the greater community about bipolar disorder.

Clinical Services

The clinic provides ongoing treatment to patients with bipolar disorder, including medication treatment and psychosocial or ‘talk’ therapy where appropriate. Long-term follow-up treatment is generally available only to those living near enough to the hospital to make ongoing visits practical.

Follow up appointments with doctors at the clinic may be scheduled after an initial evaluation or participation in a research protocol. To schedule, cancel or reschedule an appointment, please call (617) 726-5855.

At present we do not provide one-time consultations or second opinions through the clinic.

Research

Patients who meet eligibility requirements for research projects will be invited to participate in ongoing studies. In the informed consent process, the research staff will review the specific risks and benefits of entering research. Current studies include clinical trials of new treatments as well as several studies that involve brain imaging or biochemical tests.

Teaching

In addition to training psychiatric residents and fellows at MGH in the treatment of bipolar disorder, the Program provides information to patients and families. Family workshops and resource materials are provided through the MADI Resource Center and the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Institute.
